History

634 Columbus Avenue was built in 1918 by Leo Wagner, a local florist who was looking to expand his business and create a storefront. He built his shop next door to the home where he and Mrs. Wagner lived establishing a very successful business. An article in the October 10, 1941 issue of the Sandusky Register Star News reported that the Wagner Flower Shop was considered one of the finest in the country.

In the fall of 1941, Wagner sold the property to Edward and Dorothy Russell, a brother and sister who changed the name to Russell’s Flower Shop which remained in operation for the next fifty years. Many local residents still remember Russell’s Flower Shop as the place where they purchased their prom corsages and wedding bouquets.

634 Columbus Avenue has been home to other beloved businesses over the years including Bella Flora, and most recently Tre Sorelle Chocolate Shop. While changes have been made for code compliance, special care has been taken to maintain the historic nature of the original structure. Venue 634 is proud to add to the rich history of this unique downtown building.

“We are thrilled to be part of the incredible transformation of our downtown area, and I am especially excited to be revitalizing this building, knowing the community has such wonderful memories of being in this space.”
